Concarneau Third city of Finistère and rated as the fourth French fishing port.
A little history.... In the heart of the city, the maritime citadel can be discovered since the sea. The city was built around the Ville Close. This small island which was inhabited by fishermen was strengthened from the XV and the XVI century. Sebastien Prestre Marquis de Vauban will finalize the fortifications in the XVII century. At the end of the XVIII century, Concarneau is an ideal place to rest and relax for the intellectuals. In 1847, Gustave Flaubert and Maxime Du Champs start a tour in Brittany. They will remain a while at the GrandsVoyageurs . Indeed, our hotel was built in 1787. Well modern and equipped with running water, the travellers were a place snuffed and attended by famous people. At that time a large sign indicated in frontage: "Loge à pied et à cheval". The porch gave access to the cars and the horses. In 1870, George Pouchet , naturalist assistance at the Natural history museum, Doctor in Sciences came to take refuge in Concarneau. The letters which he addressed to his Parisian friends incite them to remain in Concarneau. Therefore, many scientists start to attend the city and amongst other things, seek the cause of the disappearance of the sardine. Today, the “Marinaruim” is still a real center of interest, a reference for the sea biology. At the XIX century, thanks to the scientists who attend the city and who are filled with wonder in all Parisian’s bars about it soft and pleasant climate, artists start to rush there. One will note the presence of Guillou, Maxime Maufra, Theophilus Deyrolle... Concarneau becomes the connected place which attracts even foreigners. Indeed, many American painters came to Concarneau. Even the countryside was well appreciated. Zénaïde Narychkine , Youssoupoff’s widow and comtesse De Chauveau, Russian princess who bought he manor of Kériolet and transformed it into a castle, now called Château of Kériolet . It is for Concarneau the beginning of tourism.
